Communication is the passage of information between one person to another person or between two groups. Communication involves the process of exchange of information between two persons. The word “Communication” has its origin from the Latin word “communis” which means to participate or to share.  In communication one who sends the message is sender. One who receives the message is receiver. Other elements of communication process are channel, message, encoding, decoding, and feedback. Main purpose of communication is ‘understanding’. That is message must be clearly understood by the receiver. If receiver doesn’t understand the message sent by the sender then there will be no meaning for communication.

Inter-personal and group communication is the types of communication. Communication is very important for every human being in their day to day life. Without communication it’s very difficult to exchange one’s view with another. So we use verbal or non-verbal types for effective communication. Verbal means oral or written type of communication. Non-verbal means using signs, symbols, gestures, postures etc. So in inter-personal and group communication verbal and non-verbal types are very important. Many companies are still under developed because the main problem is less communication between management and workers. So there is a need for good communication inside an organization.

Inter-personal communication and group communication is essential in all the fields. Inter-personal means face to face communication and Group communication means communication between 3 or more individuals or communicating in a group. Whenever 2 or more people meet together there communication arises. It may be through words of mouth, expressions, gestures and postures etc. so every human being would like to communicate with other person. In other words human beings want to share their feeling with others. So in our day to day life communication is a very important aspect. Communication plays an important part not only in our personal lives but also in the professional world.

Process of communication

1. Sender: Communication process starts from the communicator or sender.

2. Encoding:Encoding is the process by which sender communicates his message through words, pictures, action etc, to the communicate through a proper media

3. Receiver: Person who receives the information sent.

4. Message: Content of information sent by sender. The main topic of communication process.

5. Channel or Medium:Through which one message travel’s from sender to the receiver.

6. Decoding: Receiver accepts the message and decodes the word, symbols into ideas.

7. Feedback: Response from receiver. This is a very important element of communication.

Inter-personal communication is a type of communication occurring within the mind of a person. On average half or more of the working time of an organisation is spent in inter-personal communication. Inter-personal communication is nothing but it’s a face to face communication. It is a very easy and convenient type of communication. In inter-personal communication one can easily get feedback from another person.

In inter-personal communication immediate clarifications will be possible. One of the merit of inter-personal communication is it’s a less costly. It occurs in business organizations, family, friends etc. one should improve his inter-personal skills through knowledge and practice. Inter-personal communication includes sending of messages, direct interactions, discussions etc. The success of inter-personal communication depends on how the receiver interprets and understands the message sent by the sender.

Inter-personal communication is not only through words of mouth, it can be through gestures, postures, signs, expressions. For example 2 persons shaking hands is an inter-personal communication. In inter-personal communication if you speak or tell something to another, those words you cannot take back again. So it is irreversible.

Principles of Inter-Personal communication

Main principles of inter personal communication are:

  • Inescapable:

In day to day life all human beings communicate each other. So they exchange or pass their views from one person to another. When we communicate we communicate personally and officially.  Communication may be through words of mouth, expressions, gestures, postures etc. so for every human being communication is very important in day today life. Communication is inescapable one. Without communication it’s very difficult to survive in this modern world. In this modern world effective and good communication skills are very important in all the fields. So every person would like to share and wants to get knowledge by interacting with other peoples.

  • Irreversible:

We all communicate in our day to life. We communicate about our personal matters, business matters, family matters, problems etc. If we say something to another then those said words cannot be taken back that is communication is irreversible one. So when we say something bad then we can’t take that back. That’s why when we communicate we should properly think and we should be well knowledgeable. If we tell anything bad to someone it may create conflicts. So it’s irreversible.

Interpersonal communication is very important in day today life. Whenever we engage in communication with another person, we seek to gain information about them. We also exchange or transfer lot of information’s through verbal and non-verbal means. Some of the important functions of inter-personal communication are:

1)      Understanding:

An important function of the inter-personal communication is understanding the message. So whenever sender and the receiver communicates a particular message, that time understanding the message is very necessary. Otherwise communication will be waste. Message must be clearly understood by the receiver. There should be no doubts in the minds of the sender

2)      Gaining Knowledge:

One of the important functions of inter-personal communication is gaining knowledge. That is exchange of information from one person to another and also understanding the message sent by others. So in inter-personal communication sender and receiver will communicate to get the necessary knowledge and to get efficient information’s.

3)      Establishing Identity:

It is also one of the important function of inter-personal communication. We communicate with others to get the knowledge and also to share information. So we want to make an identity in the society. Communication is very important to make our self to be identified by others.

Advantages of Inter-personal communication

  • Inter-personal communication is less costly.
  • Inter-personal communication is easy to communicate.
  • In Inter-personal communication quick feedback can be possible.
  • In inter-personal communication there will be less conflicts.
  • In inter-personal communication there will be easy clarifications of any doubts

Disadvantages of inter-personal communication

  • Inter-personal communication is not suitable to solve problems effectively.
  • Inter-personal communication is not suitable for groups.

Group Communication

Group communication is the exchange of information and ideas between individuals using interpersonal skills. There are several ways in which groups can communicate for example phone calls, emails, face-to face conversations, and memos. In group communication team member has to actively participate for an effective communication. So in group communication every member must properly listen, deal with conflict, and respect others opinions. Communicating in groups is a skill that is learned at a young age that continues to develop as we grow up. The communication skills that are learned can be used in any group situation whether it is at school, work, and everyday life. Groups are an excellent way to make friends and establish relationships.

Group communication is important to solve problems because in a group there will be many people with different skills, so using those skills we can solve different problems easily. But in group communication scope for misunderstanding and conflict will be more than inter-personal communication. In inter-personal communication any doubts, conflicts, problems can be easily solved. But in group communication it will be difficult to solve conflicts between group members. Group communication is characterized by group. Therefore, in group communication there will be less personal contact. However, it provides better scope for quick and easy feedback and easy clarification. The group ranges in size from three to twelve or up to twenty. For example, communication in committees, workgroups, family and so on require communicating with the group.

The importance of group communication is very important in both academic and daily life environment. All human beings need these skills to involve positively in any group activities in your life and to get on well with others when you have group work with them. In the academic world, these skills become more important as teamwork plays a vital role in both study and work environments. There is concrete evidence from research that teamwork enhances the quality of learning and working, and knowing how to develop good communication skills is really important to all of us.

Group communication has following advantages they are:

In a group communication there will be more resources, knowledge, and ideas. So it’s very effective.

ü  Creativity will be more in group communication. So any work done in a group is very creative.

ü  In group communication any problems can be solved easily and effectively.

Thus, both inter-personal and group communication is very important. But in inter-personal communication only one person has the responsibility of the communication process. One person must communicate his ideas with another person.  In group communication 2 or more persons have to generate ideas, strategies and must share those ideas with other group members. So in inter-personal communication any immediate clarifications can be possible. One individual can clarify his doubt easily. There will be less conflicts. But in group communication there will be more conflicts because there are more persons and their thinking’s will be different. In business organisations, family, education, society everywhere inter-personal and group communication is important. So Communication is everywhere and it’s must.
